Cornwall’s Mayven festival celebrating their launch on the London arts scene

Renowned feminist theatre company Scary Little Girls are bringing their popular Mayven festival celebrating the power of women in midlife to London venues this November.

Running for one night only on Saturday 23 November, the Mayven Festival will be taking over The Bread and Roses Theatre in Clapham.

Working with female artists and performers and championing the work of female writers, directors and producers, the Mayven festival is a spectacular celebration of the power of all women in midlife and will bring an uplifting celebration of the freedom it brings to the London stage.

The London event will be tapping into the witchy seasonal vibes, using songs and storytelling to create an evening exploring women’s experiences ranging from the sinister to the sensual, the divine to the downright daft.

The aim is to do a quarterly Mayven event, keeping the theme seasonal, and moving it around London to attract and benefit a wide variety of creative communities

Rebecca Mordan, artistic director at Scary Little Girls, said: “We've all had such a brilliant time making and sharing work together for multiple sell-out shows in Cornwall, and given that some of us live in London, it felt like a natural next step to grow this community here and celebrate each other.

Radhika Aggarwal, founder of Echo Chamber, added: “It truly feels like we are creating something new together - something that holds the spirit and ethos of the original Mayven festivals, and also bringing our own injection of energy and values. The London event will be a continuation of the brilliant work started in Cornwall.”

The show is run in association with Olive Gold, Emer O Connor Storyteller and Echo Chamber. Rebecca is appearing along with Radhika Aggarwal, Emer O’Connor and Alice Robinson and a host of incredible talent including other emerging artists from Central Drama School and the Central St Martin’s School of Fashion. A percentage of sales will be donated to the Palestinian Circus School.

Rebecca added: “We know audiences in Cornwall have given us glowing feedback from our Mayven events. Times can feel hard and uncertain at the moment - so it feels really important to bring people some restorative, sisterly, energising evenings that can remind us we are all in life’s rich tapestry together and that it’s all worth it. We want everyone to know they are welcome at our Mayven, come one come all!”

From storytelling events to folk music performances, from celebrations of famous female artists to cabaret shows, the Scary Little Girls team will tell important stories in their own inimitable way to champion the power and strength of women.

Rebecca said: “As fans from our Cornish festivals will know, the Mayven represents a dynamic time in a woman’s life - a time when all of the experience and prowess she brings comes together in a really exciting way.”
