Join Scary Little Girls for a riotous evening celebrating Queenagers and the freedom of menopause

Renowned feminist theatre company Scary Little Girls has announced a tour of their Queenagers show across Cornwall funded by the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Good Growth Programme – celebrating the power of the older woman with a riotous look at the hilarious side of menopause.

Running from 8-14 March 2024, Queenagers will be taking over venues across Cornwall in a vivacious evening of cabaret focused on the truth about menopause - from its trials and tribulations to the uplifting freedom and positivity it can bring.

The show is filled with comedy, music, monologues and crafting hosted by peri-menopausal glamourpuss Bunny Morethan – also known as Scary Little Girls’ artistic director Rebecca Mordan, a Glastonbury Festival compère, Sky News panellist and BBC Writers Room alumna.

Rebecca said: “Bunny is here to learn all she can about what's coming down the female line. In a perfect antidote to the doom and gloom surrounding menopause, Bunny will lead audiences on a sequinned exploration of menopause and midlife.”

She added: “Our core goal is to focus on underrepresented stories, and we want to focus on this often hidden or stigmatised time in a woman’s life as one of freedom and change. There’s been an increase in positive discussion in the media about menopause recently – including Bridget Christie’s marvellous The Change – and we’re glad to be a part of this.”

And following a sold-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the outrageous stand-up of Jennifer Kennedy - award-winning author of Martha Gets the Menopause, Galloping Catastrophe: Musings of a Menopausal Woman and the hugely successful blog Is It Just Me? – joins the team as a special guest.

This is a collection of personal monologues breaking the silence around menopause and giving voice to a variety of women’s (and some of their significant others’) real experiences.

These two acts are held together with music and song, exploring and celebrating middle-aged women - or Queenagers – and audiences can join performers before the show for cakes, cocktails and crafting.

The Cornwall tour dates are:

·        Friday 8 March, 7:30pm – The Ladder, Redruth

·        Saturday 9 March, 7pm – Newquay Orchard

·        Sunday 10 March, 3pm – Hypatia Trust, Penzance

The Queenagers tour is part of a body of artistic work including festivals, tours and new commissions Scary Little Girls are set to deliver until April 2025 thanks to a £296,200 grant from the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Good Growth programme, which is managed by Cornwall Council and funded by the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund. The project is part of a £4.4m investment in a cultural events and talent programme across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly by the Good Growth Programme.

Cllr Louis Gardner, Cornwall Council cabinet portfolio holder for the economy, said: “Community and place are a key investment priority under the Shared Prosperity Fund, and supporting cultural events and talent is a vital aspect.

“Through our Good Growth Investment Plan, we want to build on Cornwall’s strong theatre and performing arts industry, bringing together diverse voices and stories to communities across Cornwall.”
